Higher Education
supporting Refugees
in Europe

Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (DE)

There are many highly qualified refugees in Germany who end up working in a different field or in a position lower than their qualifications. One key aspect for finding an adequate job or education is the language, and another key aspect is the ability to integrate into German society. This is the reason why the Integration Campus in Ingolstadt was created. We wish to support the refugees in both of these fields and finally help them find an adequate study course or job in Germany.

The Integration Campus of TH Ingolstadt prepares refugees for higher education in Germany. Our target group are refugees who were unable to finish their studies in their home country or other refugees who wish to study and who have a university entrance qualification. During the 2-year programme our aim is to provide language courses as well as integration and study-preparation courses as well as specific courses, which already teach basics of the later regular study programme.

Apart from lectures we organise mentoring projects with German students of THI and companies of the region. Through connecting at an early stage with the companies of this area, internships can be organised, and even a prospective dual study programme seems possible. Friendships and support by the German students will help the refugees to learn the language, to understand the German culture and to integrate into our society. The participants of this qualification programme are part of the university and have access to its facilities but are however not officially enrolled in the university.

We support participants to switch into a regular study programme after having finished the qualification programme.

Impact
Duration: Integration Campus started in winter semester 2016/2017.

Refugee students: 19 (up to the present day)
Strategy
The aim of the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) is to foster and support the sustainable integration of refugees.

The THI sees itself as an international university and has anchored this credo as a central part of its mission statement and aims. By participating the language courses of the programme Integration Campus the refugees overcome the language barrier. They also get either a preparation for studying in Germany or for the job market in Germany or in their home countries.
Collaboration
We are collaborating with the respective responsible district administrations, with refugee centres and refugee aid organisations.

A cooperation with companies is planned for the future.
Sustainability
Up to the present time, the planned duration of the programme Integration Campus will last until 2021 but the objective is to continue the programme beyond this period.
Funding structure
The project Integrations Campus is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Freistaat Bayern (the State of Bavaria), the city of Ingolstadt (Stadt Ingolstadt), the Bavarian State Employment and Social Affairs Ministry (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Arbeit und Soziales) and the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Research and Arts (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Bildung und Kultur, Wissenschaft und Kunst).
