Joint initiatives with University of Applied Science Bremen, University of the Arts Bremen, University of Applied Science Bremerhaven

The University of Bremen was the first university in Germany to open its doors to refugees who had an academic background in 2015. This initiative was prompted by a request from a refugee hostel that identified a rising number of refugees who either held a university degree or had to interrupt their studies.

When refugees wait for a decision on their asylum application, they have a lot of time on their hands. In the refugee hostels, they lack space to be quiet and alone, they do not necessarily have internet connection or any reasonable resources. This IN-Touch initiative of the University of Bremen addresses all of these challenges by offering a bridge to education. The programme provides a change in daily routine and a bit of normality. It even carries a chance to gain new ideas for your professional future and positive perspectives. IN-Touch also provides the chance to re-gain self-confidence and hope, after experiencing traumatising events and living off charity.

The first participants have started their academic career in Germany.

Owowunmi: “I love the project! I could make new learning experiences. It feels very good to be part of a different academic environment.”

Hiba: “It would be great if all German universities would offer such a programme for refugees. IN-Touch was the best thing that happened to me in Germany.”

IN-Touch is a programme for refugees in and around Bremen, offered as a joint initiative by the University of Bremen, University of Applied Science Bremen, University of the Arts Bremen, University of Applied Science Bremerhaven. Regardless of the kind of refugee status – those that have previously studied can join our regular lectures and be awarded with a certificate. There are only three conditions for participation: (1.) Asylum-Seeking or Refugee-Status, (2.) Studied before at a university (no degree needed), (3.) Good German or English language proficiency.

As the result of the experiences, and the needs identified within IN-Touch, the joint programme HERE-Studies was launched in 2016. It offers language and study preparation for regular studies.

Strategy links
The measurement is linked to the self-conception of the institution as a university with social responsibility, and is reflected, for instance, in the University of Bremen’s Diversity Strategy and related activities.
Collaboration
Both IN-Touch and HERE-Studies are joint programmes of higher education institutions in the region.

HERE-Studies are offered due to strong cooperation with the Language-Centre of the Universities of Bremen and the Goethe-Institut Bremen. Links with the Language-Centre already existed but in this form as a study preparation programme a complete new field.
Practice testing
IN-Touch was the first refugee orientated university programme of its kind in Germany and served as prototype for many similar initiatives within Germany and Europe.

HERE-Studies are the result of the experiences and needs met within IN-Touch. HERE-Studies are planned to be opened for all international degree seeking students at the Bremen public universities as a study preparation programme.
Funding structure
IN-Touch is completely financed by the Bremen government.

HERE-Studies are funded by the Bremen government and DAAD / Federal Ministry of Education and Science.
